Goats, llamas, and now chickens
According to FierceBiotech, symphogen
and Origen Therapeutics are teaming up to develop a transgenic chicken that can produce recombinant human antibodies against cancer, infectious diseases, and autoimmune diseases. The chickens will be used as a live breeding ground for more complex antibody development, which is believed to be more effective than current antibodies. The collaboration brings together Symphogen’s development of antibodies with Origen’s transgenic knowledge. Transgenics uses genetically engineered animals for therapeutic manufacturing. So, what part of the farmyard will the next big medical breakthrough come from?
